Sigma Unveils the 28-105mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens
Sigma has announced the 28-105mm f/2.8 DG DN Art lens for Sony E and Leica L mount systems. It combines the speed of the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens with the more versatile focal range of the 24-105mm f/4 in one, losing some range at the wide end to keep the f/2.8 aperture.
According to the company, the new lens is remarkably tiny and covers various popular focal lengths, including 50mm and 85mm, while maintaining a constant f/2.8 aperture. The lens measures 87.8 x 157.9 mm and weighs 995 g. Sigma also mentions that the lens barrel near the mount uses magnesium rather than aluminum, which it claims maintains rigidity while lowering the weight of these parts alone by two-thirds.
The optic consists of 18 elements organized into 13 groups, including two large-diameter FLD elements in the first group to reduce chromatic aberrations, five aspherical elements that help the lens maintain its small form factor, and one SLD element. A 12-bladed diaphragm can operate at apertures ranging from f/2.8 to f/22.
The 28-105mm f/2.8 DG DN Art guarantees little focus breathing, ensuring that the angle of view does not alter substantially when the focus is shifted. The lens maintains a minimum focusing distance of 40cm at all focal lengths and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.1 at the telephoto end, which Sigma claims increases the optic’s versatility.
Sigma claims that the lens’s Nano Porous Coating and Super Multi-Layer Coating have significantly reduced flare and ghosting, producing high contrast results in all settings.
The 28-105mm f/2.8 DG DN Art focuses on using Sigma’s high-response linear actuator (HLA) motor, which promises to give maximum drive speed while maintaining rapid, precise, and smooth autofocus. This type of focusing technology is also very quiet, which Sigma claims makes it excellent for video capture as well.
The lens’s body features two AFL buttons for customization and an aperture ring that may be clicked or de-clicked for photo and video applications. The lens also has a petal-style hood with a locking mechanism that keeps it securely attached to the lens. The 28-105mm f/2.8 DG DN Art is also weatherproof, with a dust and splash-resistant design.
