Sigma Announces the Development of a Cine Version of Its 28-45mm f/1.8 Art Lens

Sigma has stated that it is producing a cinema version of the 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art lens, which was announced earlier this year, and will debut it at the upcoming IBC conference in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Cine lenses do not often include autofocus, however that is not what qualifies a design for “cinema” use. The only thing that distinguishes a photography lens from a cinema lens is the construction, which is why the optical formula of Sigma’s Cine line lenses is identical to that of photography lenses.

The lens is based on Sigma’s 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art, which it claims is a popular optic among filmmakers, and it will be Sigma’s first cinema lens to have autofocus. It features a focus ring with distance indicator, a de-clicked aperture ring, and is compatible with Φ95mm matte boxes. Sigma did not provide photographs of the lens in its marketing, nor did it provide an estimate of how much the lens will cost.

The lens will join Sigma’s full line of Cine lenses at the show, and the firm says “all products” will be available to sample in a dedicated testing area, however Sigma does not specify whether this includes the prototype 28-45mm f/1.8 cine lens.
