Sony Announces Two New AI-Powered 4K Camcorders

Sony has currently introduced two new AI-powered 4K camcorders, the X200 and NX800, that incorporate technology from its Alpha series cameras. These camcorders are designed to improve video capture with capabilities that are especially appealing to videographers seeking precision and versatility in dynamic circumstances.

Equipped with advanced AI, these camcorders offer enhanced autofocus and subject-tracking capabilities, which can be incredibly useful for capturing spontaneous moments with clarity and speed. The integration of Sony’s renowned Alpha technology ensures that the image quality remains top-notch, even in challenging lighting conditions.

Both new camcorders feature the same sensor, lens, and image stabilizations. The sensor is a 14-megapixel Type 1.0 Exmor RS CMOS, stacked and capable of recording 4K/60p at full width (5K oversampling) and 4K/120p. The 24-480mm f/2.8-4.5 equivalent zoom lens provides 20 times optical zoom. The variable ND strength varies from 1/4 to 1/128.

The two new camcorders differ in their connection and intended use cases. Sony markets the less priced NX800 as a professional-quality camcorder aimed at more consumer-oriented applications, whilst the more expensive Z200 is geared for professional workflows. To that aim, the Z200 supports SDI and timecode and will add MXF wrapper compatibility in June 2025. Sony claims the Z200 will be better suited to professional broadcast conditions than the NX800.

For photographers and videographers who often work in fast-paced, unpredictable settings, these new Sony camcorders could be game-changers, offering the perfect blend of portability, power, and precision. Both new Sony camcorders will be available for preorder starting August 21, with the NX800 priced at $3,300 and the Z200 at $4,000. The camcorders will be available for purchase in mid-September.
