Tokina Annonuces the Releases of 3 New Catadioptric Lenses
The three APS-C mirrorless camera lenses were first introduced in October via a crowdfunding campaign in Japan. The company raised around $85,771, or more than 3,600% of its goal. Tokina indicated it aimed to introduce the lenses internationally by the beginning of 2023, so today’s statement that they would be readily available by February 3 is right on time.
The lenses, which will be available for Sony E, Fujifilm X, and Canon EF-M cameras, are entirely manual and reflex lenses — also known as mirror or catadioptric designs — allowing them to be significantly more compact than lenses with a more traditional optical design.
“Thanks to a catadioptric optical design these lenses are very light weight and super compact,” Tokina says. “These products allow you to enjoy the world of super-tele photography, and is a perfect option for users who are looking for affordable super tele photo lens.”
The main disadvantage of this sort of lens is that it produces a bokeh pattern that looks like groups of little rings rather than a regular bokeh pattern. Some photographers like it, while others find it too distracting. The benefit of the design is how small the lenses can be for those who can look past the bokeh pattern.
The Tokina SZ 300mmPRO Reflex f/7.1 MF CF is characterized as smaller than a cup of coffee in size and weight, weighing 235 grams. The SZ 600mmPRO Reflex f/8 MF CF is heavier at 545 grams. The SZ 900mmPRO Reflex f/11 MF CF is much larger, at 725 grams. The latter two lenses are not tiny, but when compared to regular lenses, they are insanely compact for the zoom throw.
Another advantage of the reflex lens design is that it is substantially less expensive to produce.
The Tokina SZ 300mmPRO Reflex f/7.1 MF CF is $399 to pre-order, the SZ 600mmPRO Reflex f/8 MF CF is $599 to pre-order, and the SZ 900mmPRO Reflex f/11 MF CF is $699 to pre-order.
