TTArtisan Unveils a 500mm f/6.3 Telephoto Lens
A 500mm f/6.3 telephoto lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras with E, L, RF, and Z-mount has been announced by TTArtisan. TTArtisan is no stranger to one-of-a-kind lenses. The company revealed last month that its 50mm f/1.4 Tilt Lens for mirrorless cameras will be coming to Micro Four Thirds. In addition to lenses, the Chinese manufacturer also released an upgraded light meter for analog cameras.
The TTArtisan 500mm f/6.3 telephoto lens has eight elements divided into five groups, including two extra-low dispersion and two high-index glass elements. Despite its lengthy focal length, the full-frame telephoto prime lens weighs just over 300 grams. The lens size is not specified in the TTArtisan product listing, but hands-on product images suggest that it is a reasonably long, narrow lens. The filter thread on the lens is 82mm.
While a 500mm f/6.3 lens may sound appealing for action photography, such as wildlife and sports, the TTArtisan 500mm f/6.3 lens is a manual focus lens, thus it is better suited to slow-moving scenes and still life.
TTArtisan is also promoting the lens for deep-sky astrophotography, of course, in conjunction with a star tracker. According to TTArtisan, the two ED lens elements provide good coma control, ensuring that stars in the frame look as circular point sources.
When used on a full-frame camera, the manual-focus lens can focus as close as 3.3 meters, resulting in a maximum magnification of around 0.2x.
The TTArtisan 500mm f/6.3 lens’s best characteristic is not a technical parameter at all, but rather its pricing. The lens costs only $329, making it a very affordable telephoto lens for mirrorless cameras. Even the Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM lens, which retails for less than $800, costs more than twice as much as the new 500mm f/6.3 lens. The Canon RF 600mm lens, of course, includes autofocus capabilities.
That is the closest point of comparison for the TTArtisan 500mm f/6.3 lens, since it is simply a highly unusual lens that might be a terrific choice for photographers on a budget or seeking for a fun lens to use in conjunction with a star tracker.
