In September 2021, I traveled across Ukraine with a Swedish friend. We were on our way to Asia. We crossed the border into Ukraine by foot from Prezmysl, Poland (where now millions of refugees have passed), and continued by train to Lviv, Chernivtsi, and Odessa. Despite ongoing conflict in Donbas and Crimea what we experienced in Ukraine was hopeful, and full of joy and promise. The people, places, and culture we experienced were welcoming, generous, proud, and beautiful.
A highlight was meeting some relatives of mine in Ukraine for the first time. One evening in Odessa, we discovered an open air performance by the national ballet with a live orchestra. It was breathtaking. I caught this image from behind the stage. A principal ballerina waiting for her entrance. Having an intimate conversation with a fellow dancer while still wearing her warm-up leggings.
I understand that many Ukrainian artists who have now fled as refugees to Poland and neighbouring countries have found shelter and a home to practice their craft in the opera houses and theatres of the host nations. This senseless war in Ukraine must end, so the continuing beauty of life and art can continue.
