In summer 2019, Muscovites went into the streets to protest peacefully against unlawful municipal elections and the authorities sent riot police to beat and detain the protesters. Almost every Saturday, demonstrators came into the downtown and were detained in thousands, hundreds were brought to courts and tens were sentenced to years in prison.
