First ten days of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, Muslims mourn for the martyrdom of Karbala. Especially for Shia muslims, these days accepted as major religious commemoration. First eight days, people get together in mosques and pray. 9th day of Muharram, the day Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad and his friends was surrounded by Damascus army in Karbala is called “Tashua”. The day Husayn ibn Al was killed, 10th day, is called “Ashura”. These last two days of Muharram, It is marked with mourning rituals and passion plays re-enacting the martyrdom. Men and women dressed in black also parade through the streets slapping their chests and chanting.
