Kutupalong camp near Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh, only a few kilometres from the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, is the largest refugee settlement in the world. Beginning 25 August 2017, several hundred thousand ethnic Rohingya fled Myanmar (Burma) to Bangladesh where they joined an existing refugee population of some 230,000 persons making the total close to one million. Hosting a refugee population of this size puts enormous pressure on Bangladesh and durable solutions must be found. This picture was taken in October 2017 when I visited the camp. A sea of shelters and other structures was continuing to emerge in the hilly landscape. Two-plus years on what was hoped to be a temporary situation is now long-lasting.
