“Palimos po” is to beg for alms- a common everyday scene here in the Philippines. It happens on streets, public transportations and etc. Sad to say, almost a part of our daily culture.Giving alms is maybe an act of virtue fueled by compassion yet we should give rightfully. Giving doesn’t always help. When we give money, we hurt more than we help because we perpetuate a cycle of poverty. Begging is one of the most visible forms of human trafficking—financed and enabled by good-hearted people who just want to help. Let us fuel compassion by giving rightfully through looking for creative new ways to them such as donating to responsible NGOs. Through these, we help yet won’t disrupt familial dynamics, encourage long-term poverty, undercut local businesses, or abet human trafficking. Be generous: Leave those coins in your pocket.
