About me
Thomas Hackenberg was born in 1963 and lives in the German city of Braunschweig. With first strong influences going back to the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson and German photojournalist Thomas Hoepker, he loves to roam urban spaces as a candid street photographer. More in-depth information about him, his ethics and his mode of working is also found in an interview with UP Photographers at https://upphotographers.com/interviews/interview-with-thomas-hackenberg/
Being still active in his professional life as a language manager in the automotive industry, going out shooting street gives him joy, relaxes him, and creates those precious flow moments that are so short and precious. He loves to fully dive into the moment, with all his senses opened to the outside world in front of him, trying to deal with chance that strikes his fancy and might only exist for a fracture of a second. He sees himself as a classical flanêur-with-a-camera – though sometimes definitely more of a long-distance-runner. For him, a good picture must have a thought-provoking note, some humorous or quirky details, some kind of storyline rather than be just decorative. He likes pictures that pose questions rather than provide answers, and 99.9% of his photos are taken candidly. What he likes so much about street photography is the fact that you step out of the door, and you’re right in it: no clumsy gear, you don’t have to travel anywhere, you're always there. That’s why it is so magical for him, many have said this before: it’s positively an obsession! The big theater of life is always open with no closing hours.
Thomas Hackenberg’s work has been featured by resources and hubs such as UP Photographers, EYESHOT, lensculture, All About Photo or The Pictorial List. He received Finalist awards and won prizes in many street photography festivals worldwide.
